Mayan ruins of Chacchoben and lagoon of Bacalar
There is much to discover in the archaeological site of Chacchoben, next to the little Mayan town with the same name. The Mayan ruins of Chacchoben is still very authentic and surprisingly well preserved. Architecturally, they were under the influence of the Mayan people from Peten-Guatemala, who were there between 200 and 900 AD. Combine the best attractions of Costa Maya with a visit to the Bacalar Lagoon. Named for the many shades of blue that shine in the sunlight, it is called the lagoon of seven colors. The water of the lagoon feeds from underground cenotes. We discover some of them during a boat trip, and there is an opportunity to swim in the shallow areas of the so-called Pirate Island. There you can refresh yourself in the clear water and enjoy at the turquoise color.

Mayan Legacy: Excursion to the Mayan ruins of Chacchoben - boat trip on the lagoon of Bacalar
From our meeting point, we head in an air-conditioned van to the archeological Mayan ruins of Chacchoben. It will take about an hour from Costa Maya, from Playa del Carmen about 3 hours. There we take you to the times of the ancient Mayan world, in which Chacchoben played an important role. The construction dates from the second century to the ninth century AD. We will learn about the local flora and fauna, the religion of the Maya and the meaning of the sun and moon god as well as elements from the Mayan architecture.
After visiting the archaeological site of Chacchoben, we go to the breathtaking lagoon of Bacalar. It takes about 30 minutes to get there. The boat is already waiting at the jetty of the lagoon. During a stunning boat ride we discover the highlights of the lagoon in about 2.5 hours. The boat trip takes us to different cenotes, we pass along the beautiful coast and stop for a swim. Various types of birds accompany us on our journey. After the boat tour, a snack waits for us. The little pirate town of Bacalar is worth a stop and on our way back to the ship we also pass Santo Pedro, also known as pinapple village.

The travel time from Costa Maya to Chacchoben is about one hour, from Playa del Carmen about 3 hours. Please take this into account when planning your shore excursions.

The Bacalar lagoon was absolutely gorgeous and the boat tour was the best experience of our whole vacation. Chacchoben was also impressive and the combination of these two attractions was perfect for a successful day.
