The Mayan Ruins of Kohunlich

Kohunlich is one of the more remote Maya ruins, where you wil get a real Indian Jones feeling. The highlight of Kohunlich is the Temple of Masks, in which five large stucco masks are still well preserved. Four of them show human faces, another represents a jaguar, with signs of the sun god. The stairs between the masks can be climbed so you can get closer to the faces. The archaeological site of Kohunlich had its times between 200 and 900 AD. The site is approximately 2 square kilometers and is only partially accessible. The acropolis, the stelae building, the ball playground and various palace buildings are worth a visit. The Maya ruins of Kohunlich were discovered in 1912 and are architecturally influenced by the Peten Maya from Guatemala. There is a change in vegetation, about one kilometer before reaching the archaeological site. The Mayan ruins of Kohunlich are in humid rainforest climate in the middle of impressive palm formations. Normally the Yucatan peninsula has drier low forest jungle,

Excursion to Kohunlich: The hidden Mayan heritage

The meeting point is right near the cruise port.

From our meeting point we drive together in an air-conditioned van to the historic Mayan ruins of Kohunlich. From Costa Maya, this trip takes about an hour and forty minutes. The road is in a very good condition, shortly before the archaeological site, we will leave the main road and drive along a unpaveld street several kilometers into the jungle. It is worth taking a look at the vegetation, which changes suddenly. The dry low forest formations was all along the way, but all of a sudden we are in the tropical rainforest. When we arrive at the archaeological site of Kohunlich, we take you to a journey back in time to the Mayan culture. Kohunlich was an active Mayan city between 200 and 900 AD. Sometimes up to 10,000 residents lived in the city of Kohunlich.

We have about two hours for a detailed tour. The archaeological sites of Kohunlich can either be discovered together with our expert guide or on your own. You will love the location, the structures and the temple of the masks. Before returning to the ship, we still have time for a small snack before heading back the same way.

Absolutely impressive by Basti N.

We are happy that we booked this excursion. This is how you imagine remote Maya sites in the jungle. We were particularly impressed by the masks, which are still very well preserved, but also by the massive buildings.

Interesting Mayan ruins by Sergio S.
