The good news up front is that in the winter months, when it’s a little cooler and most vacationers come to Mexico and the Caribbean, there aren’t very many mosquitoes. Many cities, metropolitan areas and places with lots of wind usually have only a minor mosquito problem, even in the summer. But of course this is not true everywhere.

For this reason alone, a good mosquito spray belongs in every traveler’s luggage. Also cruisers should take a suitable mosquito repellent with them. In addition, you should be informed about possible diseases in the vacation area.

There is vaccination protection against some diseases, and you should have your travel vaccinations refreshed before your vacation.

The home country Foreign Office provides regularly updated travel advice on its website, depending on the destination country, also on the subject of health. It lists all diseases that can be transmitted by mosquitoes in Mexico and the Caribbean.

There are no vaccinations against the three most common ones, Zika, dengue fever and chikungunya. Here only a suitable mosquito protection helps.

Tropical diseases such as dengue, Zika or Chikungunya are transmitted by the so-called yellow fever mosquito or mosquito Aedes. This mosquito species is diurnal, about 3-4 mm in size and has a long proboscis. The legs are black and white striped.

Another known mosquito species that spreads disease is the Asian tiger mosquito. Only the females bite because they need the blood after fertilization for their protein needs to produce offspring. The male mosquitoes feed on plant juices.

Mosquitoes that transmit tropical diseases occur in and around the tropics. Increasingly, these mosquito species are also being detected in milder climates.

Basically, the females lay their eggs close to water. Thus, these mosquitoes occur more frequently in humid areas, in jungles, and after rain. Because yellow fever mosquitoes are diurnal and very aggressive, suitable mosquito protection is recommended also and especially during the day.

Long, light clothing and a suitable mosquito spray do wonders in repelling mosquitoes. The higher the chemical DEET (diethyltoluamide) content in the mosquito spray, the more effective it is.

However, not everyone tolerates this active ingredient, and pregnant women and young children should avoid it. Therefore, when using insect repellent, be sure to follow the manufacturer’s instructions. Below we provide recommendations for effective mosquito spray for the Caribbean and Mexico.

Many tropical doctors recommend No Bite.  It is available as a mosquito spray or for impregnating clothing. Alternatively, Anti Brumm has a high DEET content.

For pregnant women and children, other sprays with active ingredients without DEET are suitable.  In the recommendations there are links to the Amazon website. There you can order the insect repellent online.
